History of Radiant Heating

History of Radiant Heating

An English astronomer named Sir William Herschell discovered the heating effect of infrared rays in 1800. He found that blue light caused the least temperature increase on the surface of the thermometer which he used to measure the heating effect of sunlight dispersed by a prism, and that temperature increased as the color moved toward the red end of the spectrum. The radiation discovered by William Herchell and which caused a higher temperature on the surface of the thermometer was indeed beyond the red section of the light spectrum. It was the infrared range of the light spectrum.
During the 1950’s American researchers Roberts and Gordon pioneered an understanding and development of the concept of gas burning infrared radiant tube heating in a similar way to the direct radiation of the sun. Heaters operating on the infrared principle were observed to provide considerable fuel efficiency. Radiant systems have been used in the USA since the 1950 with constant advancements in their technology. The use of radiant systems has become popular, particularly in the cold northern parts of the US and in Canada. With the increasing popularity of natural gas in Europe beginning with the 1970’s, radiant systems began to be used in West Europe. In some regions, the use of LPG fuelled systems has ushered in the use of radiant systems and these systems were subsequently converted or are in currently in the process of being converted to natural gas.

As the use of natural gas began in our country toward the end of the 1980’s, gas burning radiant units gained currency. Although they are not well known as heating systems, considering the references of companies with radiant heating, it is seen that radiant heating is successfully implemented in high ceilinged, poorly insulated, and large areas that are difficult to heat with conventional systems.
